The Solidigm 122.88TB D5-P5336 SSD, initially launched at $12,399, has seen its price surge to $37,128 in just nine months. This enterprise-grade drive, designed for server and cloud data center applications, now results in a cost of around $302 per terabyte, a significant increase from the earlier approximate $101 per terabyte price point.

This massive price jump is particularly relevant for businesses looking to invest in high-capacity storage solutions. The D5-P5336 caters specifically to enterprises needing substantial data density in limited physical space, making it a prime candidate for data centers. However, the steep increase raises questions about the affordability and budget allocation for potential purchasers looking to maximize their storage investment.

In the current market, while Solidigm’s offering is attractive for its high capacity and performance specifications—providing read speeds up to 6.84GB/s and endurance of 137,523.20TB total bytes written—it stands at a premium compared to other options. Many enterprise SSDs, such as those in the 7.68TB to 30.72TB range, can be found for under $150 per terabyte when purchased in bulk. Standard consumer NVMe drives often fall between $40 and $80 per terabyte, making them far more budget-friendly. Alternatives like the Samsung 970 EVO or WD Black SN850 offer significant storage at a fraction of the price, suitable for less demanding applications or smaller companies.

This Solidigm SSD might be ideal for large enterprises focused on high-density storage solutions, particularly those constrained by space and looking for optimal performance. However, for smaller companies or those with less demanding storage needs, the price tag may not justify the benefits. Additionally, the specialty U.2 interface may not be compatible with standard consumer systems, further limiting its appeal. For those seeking broader compatibility or lower entry costs, conventional SSD options may be more suitable.
