In a recent media briefing, Hakan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo Cars, announced the company’s consideration of launching a new full-size three-row SUV that would exceed the well-regarded XC90. This ambitious project aims to place Volvo in direct competition with luxury giants such as the Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes-Benz GLS, and BMW X7. Notably, the company is also keeping an eye on future models like the BMW X9.
While no formal approval has been granted for this SUV project, Samuelsson confirmed that exploring a larger SUV is a legitimate direction for Volvo. "The bigger SUV is indeed a research direction, but the project has not yet been officially approved," he stated, keeping options open for future development.
Market Demands and Strategic Context
The demand for large three-row SUVs in the U.S. remains robust, with strong sales reflecting a consumer preference for spacious family vehicles. In China, the trend towards high-end, larger models shows no sign of abating. A recent report highlighted that 11% of original Volvo EX90 owners have traded in their vehicle for a full-size SUV, marking the highest retention loss in that segment for Volvo.
Dealers are actively urging Volvo to expand its product line to meet this growing demand. The idea of introducing a larger SUV was first hinted at back in 2020, and it appears that the momentum for such a vehicle is gaining traction.
Samuelsson hinted that this new SUV might not only be bigger but could also integrate a plug-in hybrid powertrain. "For American consumers, this vehicle will be very attractive, and it may be a larger model," he noted.
Technical Specifications and Future Outlook
While specific details remain undisclosed, reports suggest that the new SUV may utilize a hybrid solution akin to an extended-range electric vehicle, potentially offering a pure electric range of approximately 160 kilometers. Samuelsson described the anticipated driving experience as “like a tram, it accelerates quickly and runs quietly,” suggesting a focus on both performance and comfort.
As for the name, the final designation—whether XC100 or another title—has not yet been determined. The new SUV is expected to be built on the SPA2 platform, which may either continue to evolve or draw from the technical resources available within the Geely system.
Industry analysts have speculated that the upcoming model could take cues from the Jikrypton 9X, set to launch in 2025. The 9X features an impressive 900V architecture and boasts a pure electric range of around 380 kilometers, with the capability to charge to 80% in just 10 minutes. High-end variants are anticipated to deliver a staggering 1,381 horsepower, representing one of the largest battery capacities in mass-produced plug-in hybrids.
With a length of approximately 5,238 mm and a wheelbase nearing 3,167 mm, the JiKr9X falls comfortably into the full-size SUV category, rivalling even the Cadillac Escalade. This design and technological framework could serve as an essential reference point for Volvo’s own super-sized SUV.
