Europe Boosts EUV Lithography: Tips to Increase Chip Output

ASML has recently made strides in enhancing EUV lithography technology by developing a method to boost the power of lithography light sources to 1000W. Meanwhile, IMEC, a prominent European semiconductor research center, has discovered a new technique to optimize the efficiency of the Post-Exposure Bake (PEB) process in EUV lithography. This improvement involves increasing the oxygen concentration during the PEB stage from 21% to 50%, leading to a 15-20% enhancement in photoresist sensitivity specifically with MOR (Metal-Oxide Resists) materials.

This development is significant for companies in the semiconductor manufacturing sector, particularly those focused on advanced chip production. With the global demand for higher efficiency in chip manufacturing, this innovation can potentially lower production costs and elevate output levels. As the EUV lithography process becomes more efficient, it could influence purchasing decisions for manufacturers looking to invest in new lithography equipment or upgrade existing systems to stay competitive.

In the context of the evolving lithography market, ASML is at the forefront, but various alternatives exist. Traditional DUV (Deep Ultraviolet) lithography, while effective, is often seen as less capable in advancing towards smaller node technologies compared to EUV. The price of new EUV systems can exceed $150 million, much higher than DUV systems, which may be more suitable for those focused on less advanced semiconductor nodes. Manufacturers must weigh the improved outcomes of EUV against their specific production needs and budgets, considering both long-term benefits and short-term costs.

Ultimately, this advancement may appeal more to manufacturers focused on cutting-edge semiconductor technology. However, those producing less complex chips may find DUV systems better suited to their requirements and budgets. Additionally, the significant investment in EUV equipment may not justify the returns for some businesses, emphasizing the importance of evaluating specific production goals before making a decision.
