AMD Launches 84-Core Sorano Chip to Compete with Intel

AMD’s latest release, the Epyc 8005-series processors codenamed Sorano, focuses on telecom and edge infrastructure, boosting core counts to as many as 84 Zen 5 cores.

This development is significant for telecom operators and data center managers who are increasingly moving towards standard server hardware for their virtualized radio access network (vRAN) deployments. The demand for higher CPU throughput and reliable latency makes this upgrade relevant, especially as global telecom infrastructure evolves with the implementation of 5G technologies.

In terms of market positioning, Sorano sits within a competitive landscape against Intel’s Xeon line, which includes processors that scale up to 144 efficiency cores. Prices for AMD’s offerings are yet to be definitively announced, but similar high-performance processors typically range from $3,000 to $5,000.
