STMicroelectronics has officially launched the STM32V8, touted as the industry’s first high-performance microcontroller (MCU) built on an 18nm process. This cutting-edge technology will be deployed in SpaceX’s Starlink satellite constellation, marking a significant leap in satellite communication capabilities.

The STM32V8 utilizes STMicroelectronics’ innovative 18nm FD-SOI process and features advanced phase change memory, boasting a 4MB non-volatile PCM. The memory cells are the smallest currently available on the market, providing both high integration and cost-efficiency.

Equipped with the Arm Cortex-M885 core, the STM32V8 operates at a clock speed of 800MHz, making it the most powerful MCU in the STM32 series to date. STMicroelectronics manufactures this product at their state-of-the-art 300mm wafer facility in Crolles, France, in collaboration with Samsung’s foundry services.

The STM32V8 is currently undergoing early trials with select customers, with plans for an official launch targeting major manufacturing partners in the first quarter of 2026.

Industry expert Jack Gold, president of J. Gold Associates, emphasizes that the new Arm architecture combined with the 18nm process significantly enhances performance while drastically reducing power consumption, making the STM32V8 a game-changer for various applications.
